August 2008

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to seventh grade, and my class for the 2008 – 2009 school year. I am Debbie Russell, and I look forward to having your child in my science class. We are going to have an exciting year of learning through adventure, exploration, and discovery.

First, I’d like to share a little bit about myself. I am a native Memphian, but have lived in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Knoxville, Tennessee, San Antonio and Plano, Texas. I have been married for 32 years and have two children. Our daughter, Valerie resides in San Antonio, Texas. Our son, Craig resides in Houston, Texas. I love reading, traveling, family gatherings, and gardening.

My education began at Memphis State University, continued at the University of Tennessee, with completion at the University of Texas in San Antonio where I received my Bachelors Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies with an emphasis in Education and specialization in Reading. Also, I hold a Masters Degree in Education from Union University.

My teaching experiences include elementary and middle school students. I taught third, fourth, and fifth grades in San Antonio and Plano. Since returning to this area,  I found my home at Germantown Middle School teaching seventh and eighth grade science for the past four and ˝ years. I am looking forward to the beginning of my 16th year of teaching at GMS as your child’s science teacher.

Our focus in science this year will include the areas of life science, weather, and physical science. We will explore these areas through our textbook, research, projects, demonstrations, and labs. Students will be required to participate in class each day in a variety of activities. Class notes will be kept in a tabbed one and one-half inch binder. Homework will be assigned and completion is expected. Averages will consist of grades from homework, class participation, class work, quizzes, tests, labs, and projects. Tutoring will be available as needed. You will find Information including lesson plans to be successful in my class posted on my website; drussell.net. Check this often.

Wow! I know this is a lot to take in! Rest assured we will be busy this year in learning, exploring, and discovering science. Please feel free to contact me at anytime to discuss your child and this class. I may be reached via e-mail, drussell@scsk12.org. or by contacting the school office, 756-2338.

Again, welcome to my class this 2007 – 2008 school year. I look forward to meeting you and sharing this year with you and your child.

Sincerely,

Debbie Russell
